Google AdSense is a new Google service launched in 2003 in order to expand the advertisements distribution program by making it more accessible to small publishers. Any publisher can apply for an AdSense account in order to display high targeted ads on his websites. There are no strict criteria for acceptance into the AdSense program, unlike the other programs, because there are no minimum traffic requirements on applicants. The only real criteria are the standard "acceptable content" requirements that exists almost everywhere.
Once you are accepted in the program, you can display targeted ads by simply adding a JavaScript piece of code into the pages of any website of yours. According to the AdSense Terms, you are only allowed to place up to three ad units, up to three link units and a maximum of two search boxes on a single page at the same time. But this should be enough for any website that wants to have a clean decent look.
How does the targeting work?
Google AdSense allows anybody with a website that meets Google Terms Of Service to take a little snippet of JavaScript code and place it into the HTML documents in order for Google AdSense to automatically deliver ads that are contextual relevant to whatever the content of the website is. Google uses its search engine ranking system to decide wich advert is relevant to any particular web page on your website. For example, if your site is about web design, you will probably get some ads related to web design, let's say, an Adobe product ad, like Photoshop or Dreamweaver.
